The Greek philosopher Hierocles imagined human relationships as concentric circles — first the self, then the family, and outward to all humanity. Each of us must first understand and belong to ourselves deeply and fully. With a realistic understanding of our own minds and hearts we can widen our circle of compassion. Embracing these circles creates a sense of belonging to ourselves and others.
